I was so blessed to have been able to attend Sadie Marquardt's Bellydance Retreat in Switzerland this year. If you have never attended a retreat before, you definitely should try it someday!

What made this retreat so beautiful is that you have a group of women who didn't know what to expect, some knew each other, some didn't know anyone, all ages and all nationalities, but every single one of us came with a small sliver of an idea to have a wonderful time - and that idea grew into the most beautiful experience. We all fed off of each other's positive energy and then returned that energy to each other. We spent breakfast, lunch, dinner, workshops, and free time together, yet we never got tired of it because we had become a dance family.

I know I'm not the only one who is still high in the clouds after this amazing opportunity, and I think a part of me will always be up there. I can't wait until next year, that's one thing I can say for sure!

This is my performance during Sadie Marquardt's Swiss Bellydance Retreat 2015.

I was not expecting to perform that night, but Sadie told me that I should, so I agreed (I told her I would do anything she said, and I had to stay true to my word!).

I first heard "Ya Rayah" a few hours before the show and was very moved by the lyrics of the song. Little did I know that instead of only doing a very serious, heartfelt interpretation of this beautiful number, the musicians would surprise me in the middle of my dance with a drum solo! This is as improv as it gets!

It's been 2 years since my last performance, so I'm a little rusty, but this was a very exciting way of getting back into my bellydancing.

I'm looking forward to practicing and performing in the near future!

Oud: Philipp Bosshard (Switzerland)
Sombaty: David Hinojosa (USA)
Dahola: Martin Stenitzer (Switzerland)

Are you looking for some information on the legends of belly dance or the history of belly dancers who helped to make belly dance what it is today?

Check out this site:

Yesterday I started the 30 Day Yoga Challenge from Adriene via her Youtube channel.

If you're relatively new to yoga, like me, these videos are fantastic. If you're not, they can be modified to be more challenging. I highly recommend trying it!

About

I created this blog ultimately to translate Arabic songs into English for non-Arabic speaking dancers. I have learned most of what I know about bellydancing and the bellydance community on my own and by making plenty of mistakes, so I wanted to also share what I have found through my bellydance journey (which, it always seems, has only just begun!).
