Lyrics to the song Hayart Albi Ma'ak by Fadl Shaker

khaasemtak beini wa bein roo7i...wa saale7tak wa khaasemtak taani...taani
I quarreled (argued) with you between me and my soul...and I made peace with you and I quarreled (argued) with you again...again

khaasemtak beini wa bein roo7i...wa saale7tak wa khaasemtak taani
I quarreled (argued) with you between me and my soul...and I made peace with you and I quarreled (argued) with you again

wa 2oul eb3ed yes3b 3la roo7i...tataaw3ni liyezeed 7armaani
and I say keep away [for] it is becoming more difficult on my soul...you subject me to more misery (my deprivation increases)

(musical section)

yama leyaali ana wa khiyaali...efdal esabr roo7i bikelima yom 2oltaha li
oh how many nights [only] me and my imagination (dreams)...it is better to calm my soul (give my soul patience) with a word you [once] said to me one day

This song was originally sung by the late, great Oum Kalthoum, but because her version of the song is about an hour long, this version, sung by the wonderful Fadl Shaker, is a beautiful piece to which to dance.

As you've probably already noticed, the name of the song doesn't appear in the lyrics of this version.
(7aiyart 2elbi m3ak) "you confused/bewildered my heart" or "my heart is confused/bewildered with you" is the sad love story of a woman who is very much in love with this man, and although you can see all of her passion, love and longing for him, he is unable to see it himself. She is confused, bewildered, because she wants to show him how much he means to her - to the point that it exhausts her because she keeps struggling to make him see. In Oum Kalthoum's version, the song continues: she doesn't understand what she is doing wrong or what she can change to make him notice her devotion. She calls him cold-hearted and says that he has no love for her in return. It gets to the point where she has to stop herself, for the sake of her self-pride/self-esteem, because he just isn't able to understand/see.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I fell in love with belly dancing when I was 16 years old. I was a Russian dancer with a group from my church and we were performing at an international party when I saw belly dancing for the first time. I couldn't stop watching the dancer and decided from that point on that I would focus all of my dance energy on belly dancing. The rest is history...
